Desert Trumpet Plant (Eriogonum Inflatum)

One of the questions people ask a lot is "What kind of plants mean there is gold?". Well none exactly, but the gold prospectors of the old gold rush days knew a few plants meant gold could be in the area. One such plant is the Desert Trumpet Plant. This plant is common in mineralized soil where gold is normally found but does not mean that gold is there. It is an indicator of mineralized ground. There have been times where I've hiked and hiked and once I found the trumpet plant I found gold. But this plant can grow where gold is not present as well or is present in only microscopic quantities. Some areas are like forests of trumpet plants. They can be green, brown, red, orange, blackish, tan depending on season, stage of life and mineral content of the soil. Often people confuse another type of plant with the desert trumpet plant.

Below are photos to help you identify the desert trumpet plant and hopefully good gold prospecting areas. Its just a piece of knowledge. Pictures with a border you can click to enlarge. Happy Hunting!
