Locations of Placer Gold
Placer gold occurs in many locations around the world. The old time gold prospectors were able to discover the gold placers that we know of today. However there remains in all gold bearing regions of the world undiscovered placer gold locations both of economic value and uneconomic valve. Those undiscovered locations where placer gold can be found in economic quantities are much more rare than the uneconomic ones. The recreational prospector has the chance to find either or. And consideration has to be given that a economic placer gold deposit would be of great interest to developed or small scale mining companies. Often when reading maps and making comparisons you can see where placer gold was found near a certain type of rock out crop and that outcrop might extend for a long distance. It is very important when conducting research on gold placer deposits to if possible obtain geologic maps of your area of interest. When you use these and compare them to where gold was found in the past and look and see where the same geologic conditions exist you have a greater chance of finding a placer deposit as opposed to just randomly searching for one. This can be thought of as the common science of similarity, success equals success.
One of the best methods for new prospectors is to go where gold has been found before. Note the rocks, the geology of the area, the plants, etc and maybe even bring your digital camera to make photographic notes. A lot of areas that contain placer gold have different characteristics so not all things found in one are will be applicable to another area. Time, patience and field experience come into play here. The more you spend time in the field actually looking for gold the more you will learn. If you are out looking for a new gold deposit be sure to sample and sample some more, not only with your drywasher or pan but also with your metal detector. One often over looked fact is that in areas with sizeable gold nuggets it will occur rarely that there is often a distinct lack of fine gold, little if any is every found. The reasons for this can vary but the main thing to keep in mind is don't treat every area like the last one. Be ready to think outside the box when looking for gold placers.
Placer gold can also often occur in known lode gold bearing areas. Don't overlook these possibilities and the fact that gold often is present in other types of mining as a byproduct. Think about this and how you can put this information to use in your quest for the elusive yellow metal called gold.
